borfast Posted June 15, 2004 Posted June 15, 2004 For all of you (Mozilla) Firefox fans, 0.9 has just been released. And boy, are you in for a surprise! Get it here: http://mozilla.org/products/firefox/ Read about it here: http://www.madpenguin.org/cms/html/47/1695.html http://slashdot.org/articles/04/06/14/1911242.shtml?tid=113&tid=126&tid=154&tid=95 Quote
MikeJ Posted June 15, 2004 Posted June 15, 2004 I installed it yesterday on my Mac. The smart update looks nice, and it renders as well as Mozilla, but beyond that I haven't noticed much significant difference yet (although I still use Mozilla as my default browser... mozilla seems to work better on the mac overall than firefox so far, and is more configurable). Quote
borfast Posted June 15, 2004 Author Posted June 15, 2004 Mike, yes, the Mozilla suite of applications has much more stuff to configure than Firefox On the Mac you might not notice much difference, because the greatest visible difference is that the default theme has changed to a theme that looks a lot like the default theme for Mac (pinstripe, if I'm not mistaken). Windows users will also notice one big advantage over the previous versions: the download size is now just a little over 4 Mb! woooot 4 Mb and you get the most advanced (or at least one of them) web browser there is! Hey, Microsoft, how does that compare to your old Internet Explorer and it's huge size? There are also a few new things but these are the most significant ones for non-tech users Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted June 15, 2004 Posted June 15, 2004 Hey, Microsoft, how does that compare to your old Internet Explorer and it's huge size? Um, you are forgetting one thing Raul... I.E comes with a lot of extra stuff that takes alot of space that Firefox doesnt deliver in its smaller filesize...unfortunately its just security problems and stuff... Quote

TCH-Dick Posted June 15, 2004 Posted June 15, 2004 one thing I have noticed with the new firefox, things that didnt work before on some pages now work. Before a lot of the stuff in phpnuke that uses scrolling text/images didnt work now it does, Quote

TCH-Don Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 Oh I do like it Thumbs Up I had been using Firebird but it would close down now and then. I used the new Firefox for two days and no troubl. I love the way you can customize the bars at the top. Quote
annie Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 The new version ate itself on my system. I tried various things, but ended up reinstalling the old 0.8 Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 I tried upgrading two Xp systems and neither of them would launch Firefox when done. I ended up uninstalling .09 and .08 and installed .09 again. Then it worked fine. Quote
joly Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 I downloaded it last night to see what its like and I like it! Joly Quote
GroovyFish Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 I loved it too! For the whole 24 hours I got to use it. It stopped launching so I had to uninstall and reinstall 0.8 Quote
TCH-Dick Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 yeah, it was great the 4-5 days that it worked. now if I launch it it just crashes. I have even tried uninstalling it, cleaning up the registry and re installing it and even with a fresh clean install it crashes as soon as it loads a page. I'm back to mozilla 1.6 Quote
youneverknow Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 I loaded it 2 days ago and yesterday it crashed!!! When I tried to launch it would not run!!! I did a clean install of win xp and loaded all the apps (6 hours of work). I have it installed on the clean system ....by the way I started having problems when doing a search on these forums... youneverknow Check out the Firefox forums of all the problems occuring: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=86195 Quote
annie Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 Amazing, so it wasn't just me! I guess 0.9 wasn't release ready after all! Quote
TCH-Don Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 This is strange, it work great for me. Using now. Quote
Venusian31 Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 0.9 has something wrong with it. I installed it and it worked for a few days and then I started having all kinds of problems with it. I uninstalled and reinstalled it but it still wouldn't work. I got fed up with it and went back to 0.8. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 After uninstalling .8 I did get .9 to install and run. That was two days ago. So far so good. From reading the replies in here I may be in for problems in a couple of days. Quote
TCH-Don Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 From their forum, more people have had no trouble. Me, I just installed on win98se I did not un-install the older one. Heres hoping I do not have any trouble as I like this one. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 (edited) Im on XP and did not uninstall previous version first (since i forgot that step ) but no problems so far... by the way I started having problems when doing a search on these forums But i have not been in to these forums yet with 0.9...so i cant tell how it works here. Deverill Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 I've been using it since it came out. No problems here (WinXP Home and Pro at work). I also just installed it and let it do the house cleaning. .7 to .8 was a mess for me but .8 to .9 was as it should be. Best wishes to the rest of you though in getting it straightened out. Quote
silica Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 I'm using 0.9 on XP Pro without problems. Some of the extensions, like the Googletoolbar, are great. Quote
annie Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 Looks like it's a known problem by now, and they think they've found a solution: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=86585 Quote
