Hmm, do you really want Google's search engines trapsing through your emails looking for stuff?

There are a lot of folks concerned about the thought of it.

Here's an interesting article about Gmail:

Personally I'm looking forward to gmail. I dont care if a script scans the e-mail looking for keywords to show me adds (the adds by the way are less than 125 x 125 displayed on the right or left sidebar) It's not like someone is sitting and reading my e-mail.

It's a dangerous precedent. I personally wouldn't use that for private communications; however when you sign up for it, I believe that you *agree* to that scanning. For me, that's the crucial point. If they were doing it without an agreement in place, I'd be worried. It just screams of a step towards 'big brother' syndrome.

I can HARDLY wait to sign up for my account! :(

You may not have to! Check out gmailswap.com. There you can make offers of things to swap for a Gmail invitation. Everything from free webhosting for a year to eternal friendship. If someone with an invitation to give out likes your offer then you're in.

(It's down right now. They just were wrote up in a popular site so it may be bandwidth issues... they shoulda got TCH hosting!:))

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't know much about Gmail.. lots of threads were about that on EMD, butI do'nt know if I would like to have an account there... I have a specific domain for emails and also have backup emails account in 2 of the most reliable email providers (FM and RB), I don't think that i would ever use Gmail... ok, If I got a free invit , I wil ltry that out but I will not use that as main email...

My main concern is about spam in fact... what is the domain which receives the most spams? ermmm let me think... hotmail,, isn't it?

why? because there are famous and *crapy* (did I say that? lol)

I am affraid with Gmail, as they are very well know due to google that they will be heavily spammed... I may be totally wrong and I hope so, but that's my personal "fear" about Gmail...

The second one will be the "big brother" thingie as they browse your emails to display ads... I will never ever accept that...

But if you are not scared of received lots of spams, nor to have your email checked, then I agree Gmail is great

The spam filters are very efficient. I'm not sure what specifics they are using, but it is on par with SpamAssassin.

The ads are not intrusive, even less intrusive than the AdSense program that feeds them.

So far, I like how replys are grouped together with the original email. A neat way to thread subjects.

The ads are a constant reminder that Gmail is less private than other email solutions. But if I wanted to make sure no one could eavesdrop on a message (at least in this decade), I would encrypt it with GPG, or call the person up on the telephone instead!

Gmail is awesome!

- extremely fast (almost feels like local mail)

- grouping by conversations (ala outlook)

- labels instead of folders (no duplication)

- 1G of storage (you dont have to immediately delete the 5Megs zipfile containing snaps from the last long weekend)

- Ads? If anything, they're actually useful.

The email scanning doesn't worry me at all. If they are scanning my messages in order to put ads up, I don't care. Also, I read that they won't put those little tags on the bottom of emails.

Does anyone have any idea when it will be released?
