Tch Customers Webring

On March 12 2004, in "TCH Family Only" we started to discuss how to support/help our family members. The webhosting family page is good, but you will most likely need to be a forum member to know about it so i got an idea. Why not start a webring?

TCH-Glenn had a look on this thread but suggested i asked a "red coat" to read it too. Yesterday i asked Bill, and he thinks this is a great idea.

This webring is not only ment to be a place for visitors to our sites to see that we not only have found a host that we are proud enough about to be customers to, to create a webring for, but also a place where you can advertise your "help" in site description (which will become a directory in future).

By creating a webring we can show that we like TCH to others that doesnt even know TCH exist and in time get a directory where we can find help with webdesign, graphics etc...

In my opinion everyone will win, TCH getting advertising and we customers a place where we advertise our services and help (if filling out site description well that is).

Joining the TCH Customers Webring is very simple.

Go to TCH Customer Webring and click the "Join" link and follow the instructions.

Hopes to see you :)

EDIT: There was some confusion with the links as you can see in below posts but they have been taken care of now. Just follow the above instructions. I have also deleted all my posts that made it confusing.

Thomas,

This is a great idea! I just tried to join the web ring but got the very cute little error page. Please let us know when you're ready to start accepting ring members.

I can't wait! :)

Not this one:

http://www.jikrantz.se/tchwebringinfo.htm

It's on top of the ring fragment at the bottom of the page.

Also, the LIST link should go to a list of sites, not the add site page, according to webring logic and how other rings work.

Yes, Annie is correct. The links work, but not the h*tp://www.jikrantz.se/tchwebringinfo.htm link. That's the link we'd need to access in order to sign up for your web ring.

Hi Annie,

We break the link because of forum policy. In a TCH forum, active links should only point to pages with the TCH domain, proper. You can ask TCH-Bruce for more info. He's the one that reminded me of the policy...

Where does it say you need to access it on that page? :)

It tells you that to join, you should enter the TCH Customers Webring area. Here's how you phrased it...

Joining this webring is very simple:

Click the "Join" button in the TCH Customers Webring area on this site and follow the instructions.

I will then check your site and *approve it.

We break the link because of forum policy

I see nothing about that in forum guidelines. :)

It is an unspoken policy. The reason for not making every link you enter active is for search engine reasons. If the link is to something within the TCH domain then by all means make it active. Like a link to the help desk, another TCH forum thread or TCH page.

We are just trying not to improve other sites rankings with links from this forum.

It's not hard to make the link inactive. Just enclose it in the color tags or edit the http with h*tp or something like that.

Thanks for understanding. ;)

Dang it Bruce, beat me to it.

Devils advocate : But Bruce, Thomas has his web site in the add me to the family area and it is hosted on our servers. It isnt like it is adult material or for any other reason listed in the forum guidelines. How am I supposed to know if it is unspoken? Spoken it so we can all know.

Thomas

I get a 404 for

TCH Customers Webring

http://www.jikrantz.se/tchwebringinfo.htm

but not

http://www.jikrantz.se/webringinfo.htm

I am in too :)

*Annie they are trying prevent outbound links from the forum,

but in this case it is not necessary as Thomas is a customer.

We try not to make an active link to other sites

for SEO reasons

You can also just make a link bold or a color to deactivate it.

I edited out what I had said in the first place in my previous post. Thomas, you can link to your site in this post. As long as your link isnt for personal gain or a violation of the forum guidelines you are generally ok. Make sure the link is to a place you think TCH itself would want to link to. A link to adaware is fine but an adult toy shop or another hosting company isnt.

We as mods will always change it if it needs to be changed and explain why so dont get too worried about it.

You are welcome to make links to your site active if you are hosted here at TCH and your site does not go against TCH policy for sites that can be listed on the family links page.

As Rob states as long as your site is not for personal gain or the other reasons mentioned it's OK.

Thomas as my web ring code is in a frame,

I modified it to open links in the whole frame or _top

by adding TARGET="_top" to each link.

On the other hand, if you post a lot here, and maybe a little bit personal, making a link active, or even having an inactive link on the forum will make it possible for people to find you through searching for your domain name and forum.

There's one thing I've been wondering about, and been slightly frustrated about:

Google will currently not bring up search hits for text that isn't visible on the page. So that means if I don't want people to follow me in here from Google, I can have my domain name under the www button at the bottom of each post, but shouldn't put the domain name in the body of a post, unless it's in a forum not indexed by Google.

To elaborate a tiny bit on "for SEO purposes." We need to restrict any links that are not family oriented. If you have a nudie picture site then you need to not put the address in the forums.

Another thing is that search engines try to determine your intentions by the sites you link to. If we put a ton of links in here to link farms or other "low class" sites then TCH suffers with the search engines and anyone who reads the posts will think less of us than they should.

Also, we want this to be a productive place, not a free for all place for people to link to their sites just for profit. If half the links were junk then our overall value would drop tremendously.

Finally, TCH is a business and we need to keep things "pretty much" web oriented. Of course we go off on tangents all the time but I'm sure you have all seen threads closed that ventured down a path that leads totally away from web hosting (religion and politics are 2 that come to mind immediately.)

It's not just about SEO but it is also about having a nice clean home for our family to come home to and not have to worry about doggy doo all over the front hallway. :)

If it is just a snippet of HTML with links out then treat it as any other outgoing links on your site. If it is javascript or something that has to be interpreted by the browser then I believe that none of the major search engines are bothering to render that stuff so it will, in essence, be invisible to them, IMO.

Jikrantz,

I have joined the Webring.

Now, a question: I note that my site ID number is 10. Does this actually mean the ring contains only 10 members to date?

Are you allowing commercial sites to join the new webring or is it limited to personal sites only?
Answer: Yes, anyone can join as long you are a TCH customer.

Answer: Yes, for the time being i think we are only 10 members, but 1) its pretty new, 2) we all need to share this with our TCH family members to get it going. :)

Thanks, Thomas! I think this will be a lot of fun.

Sorry it took me a while to get back to you. Work's been kicking my rear end lately. Putting in double-shifts and near double-shifts to make up for someone else's deficiencies is not my idea of a good time! Mad!!!

Hopefully, things will start to quiet down a bit over the next few days. At least we've gotten past the hump (I think).

I'm proud and happy to be wearing the deputy badge for the TCH Customers Web Ring!
