!!blue Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 Movable Type's new version will now cost me to use!! WTF!? Why are they all of a sudden deciding to charge?! Do I have to swtich? Can I still use the current version I have now? Won't it be rocket-scientifically hard to switch to another blog system? Help calm my overwhelming fears!!!!! SAAAVVEEE MMMEEEE!! www.movabletype.org/news/2004_05.shtml www.dezwozhere.com/blog/archives/000618.html www.sixapart.com/corner/archives/2004/05/its_about_time.shtml *currently running around in circles* !!blue Quote
DarqFlare Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 Yes, there will be a free version of Movable Type 3.0. Says so on http://www.sixapart.com/corner/archives/20...bout_time.shtml Basically, it seems that eventually they'll roll out a free version of 3.0, or that they'll simply license out for bigger entities, i.e. corps and institutions. I'd wait to see what happens though. Just stick with an old version for now, and wait to see if there's a place to grab a free 3.0 version. Quote
MikeJ Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 You can continue to use the old version. They will eventually release a free version for 3.0 but it will only allow one author and up to 3 blogs.... and there's question about what else might be "crippled" in the free version. Quote
!!blue Posted May 14, 2004 Author Posted May 14, 2004 Ok, that helps me calm my fears... thanks! I'll wait around to see if MT changes their tune... if not I'll have to balance whether I want to pay or just use th efree version. later, !!blue Quote

greenbriel Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 There already is a free version of 3.0, it just limits you to one author and three blogs. I have more than that already, so I'm sticking with 2.64 (I wish I'd downloaded 2.661 before they pulled it from the site - I've been scouring the net for somewhere to download the archive, to no avail). I think I'll probably to a test install of 3.0 just to try it out. The free version can be found at http://secure.sixapart.com/ look on the right side of the page. You need a typekey registration, but that's free and worth having anyway I do love MT (I even donated and everything), but it might be time to see if there's a great open source package out there ... --- Gabe Quote
borfast Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 The Slashdot article I mentioned refers WordPress as a possible substitute. http://wordpress.org/ Quote
MikeJ Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 If you do decide to try out wordpress, this may be of some help: http://blog.carthik.net/vault/2004/05/14/movabletype-to-wordpress/ Quote
LisaJill Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 There's a bunch of tools, drupal (drupal.com) textpattern (textpattern.com) and now expressionengine (expressionengine.com) is having an amazing, free promotion - I got my copy already. I moved to textpattern a few weeks ago but EE is amazing, if I can find some way to move my stuff over.... I may be moving to yet another new weblogging tool; but this one looks like an amazing longterm option; has everything that I want or think I may want at some point Overkill to some extent but hey. MikeJ Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 I'm personally switching to Wordpress since it's opensource, and I only use it as a weblog. Textpattern has more CMS functions, but who's to say they won't pull an MT move (they even state in their forums they haven't decided how future licensing will work yet). Expression Engine isn't free (but at least they are up front about it). Even if you get it for free, I would bet you will have to pay for upgrades at some point in the future. It does look nice, but at $149+ I'd wait until I would actually need that much flexibility and support. Quote
LisaJill Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 Dean has promised that the personal licenses would remain free, for textpattern. EE states this: Do I have to buy a new license every year? When you purchase a license you own it forever. You can use the license as long as you want. Included with your license is access to our download area where you can download free updates for one year, and to our support forums forever. After one year, if you want to continue accessing the download area for continued updates you can purchase a yearly renewal for $19.95 (non-commercial license) or $39.95 (commercial license). for the amount they offer, I'm willing to pony up $20.00 for upgrades each year if I need to. It's by far the best weblog/cms tool out there. I've had wordpress installed for quite some time. It just doesn't do 'it' for me. rolleyes: Quote
!!blue Posted May 18, 2004 Author Posted May 18, 2004 Thanks for all the great info! :-D I'm hesitant to start changing things around and plus I don't have as much free time as I use to I might as well do the free MT3.0 cuz I only have one author (me) and one blog. I hope they keep their forums open if I need help cuz I wouldn't get Tech Support. Not that I ever needed tech support, their forums were usually enough to find help tho they take their time if you're problem's not major. 'sides, a friend of mine is of the idea that soon other blog tools will start charging if MT gets away with it. later, !!blue Quote
greenbriel Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 Thanks all, great info here ... lots of stuff to check out. I'm especially intrigued by Lisa's enthusiasm for expression engine (downloading now), and Mike's statement that Textpattern has more CMS functions. I've been looking for a simple CMS to build an online portfolio, and after using MT as a cms for another clients site, I'm loathe to do it again. Moving my main mt site over to any new system is going to be a pain for me - multiple sideblogs, mt plugins for amazon links, comment subscription, polls. uck. Cheers, -Gabe Quote
LisaJill Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 I love textpattern; it's clean, fast, easy to use. But it has a lot of workflow and features that are hardcoded and not easy to customize. With EE you can dig in and make the workflow do things that way you want to. It's also incredibly powerful and very fast. It has steeper learning curve and some things are only still now starting to click with me; but the more I use it the more impressed I am - and I haven't run into any walls like I did with txp. EE is definitely more of a *full* cms solution, at that. Great team behind it too. =) Quote
MikeJ Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 I ran across a page someone put together with a feature breakdown of several different blog engines in case someone finds it useful. I personally only have extensively used MT and WordPress, but the chart in general looks relatively accurate. You can find the chart here: http://www.asymptomatic.net/blogbreakdown.htm Quote
