  1. I don't use a browser to FTP. Try it in an FTP client.

And it would be subdomain.domain.ext not subdomain@domain.ext

No - it wasn't a typo... the configuration you mention brings up this error messag:

    The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few

    moments.

    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network

    connection.

    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure

that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

    In IE7 I get:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

    Most likely causes:

You are not connected to the Internet.

    The website is encountering problems.

There might be a typing error in the address.

And - I gather he doesn't have a client and hasn't ever had to have one. Is that a requirement for sites hosted here?

  2. OK - I set this up and now can't figure out how to get into it.

More specifically - the person I'm trying to help says that he normally just types the ftp address into a browser window and gains access that way (as opposed to using an ftp software solution).

    Here's what I have: ftp://subdomain@maindomain.net

That actually does bring up an authentication window, but when I put the password in - it doesn't work.

How do I give him access to the subdomain? What am I doing wrong?

  3. I want to give a staff member of mine access to my account so that he can practice using php and mysql. I know that I can give him FTP access (but forgot how to do that), but I'm not clear that giving him access to a subdomain or test account by ftp will give him enough access to play around with the code.

Is this doable, assuming that I'm going to trash the subdomain when he's finished?

and - HOW do I do it?

  4. Hi! I'm hiring someone to work on my SMF forum, and he requests access to the source code of the file. I assume this means he needs to get into the server, but that would mean giving him my password - and since I like my password - I don't want to give it away! :thumbup1:

So - is there some other way to get the code to him (including existing modifcations installed, etc.?) If I change my password, can I change it right back again, after he get's what he needs from the server? Am I making any sense at all???

  5. I'm back! ok - So, we're ready to do the nameserver change. However - to prevent business disruption, he would like to build his site on the servers HERE first, and then do the nameserver change, so that the DNS change points to the new site, and not an "under construction" site.

What's the best way to do this?

  6. I'm inquiring for someone else, who has a domain hosted by free website. He's ready to expand his site to have more functionality, including forums, but wants to know the following:

    1. Does he HAVE to transfer the domain? Or, can he have hosting here, and the domain somewhere else?

    2. What is the process for transferring a domain if necessary?

  7. The account with the username '***', is running out of disk space. Please remove some files from this account, or ask the administrator to increase your disk quota. You have currently used 86.24% of your disk space.

What does this mean? Would this be because of some backup files? Or??? I have very little on my sites?

  8. I'm really concerned that its a hard disk error, because I was having problems before I wiped the drive and tried to install XP again.

OK - I don't know how to copy the files from the disk without installing XP a second time, and I don't know how to get to DOS from the installation disk. Can you give me some step-by-step help here?

  9. Well - let me explain what happened. I asked him to help me with my SMF forum - he will be helping me with the SMF arcade install and also with a new theme installation and such. He stated that he didn't want to download too many things to his hard drive so I offered to set him up with his own space to work from. I think we are disconnecting because I didn't install an SMF forum there. That's got to be the problem... whereas I thought he was going to do so!

  10. the file it is stuck on is cdaudio.sys. It gets there and sits... for hours, without doing anything. Why won't this file install, and what can I do about it?

Attempting to install XP NTFS. Priorly the hard drive had XP FAT. Does that have anything to do with anything?

  11. Is there a way for me to give someone user access to cPanel only specific folders?

I created a subdomain and gave someone FTP access to that domain only, but he now says he can only upload and download stuff - he can't get in and around to do anything with the files - which ultimately defeats the purpose of me setting up the subdomain, which was intended as a workout/testing area before trying new stuff on my live site.

    Help?

  12. Here's what I did, and here's what happened.

    1. Logged into cPanel from my handheld.

    2. Clicked on "Change Password."

    3. Changed the password.

The screen then flashes something that says "Password changed, frontpage trying to change password" or something like that and THEN I get challenged for a password.

It doesn't accept the password! AND, it asks over and over again, without giving me the option to say "I lost my password!"

The first time I did this - I really got confused and forgot what I'd put for a password, so I had to shut down the web on my handheld, and come back - at which point I attempted to log in, failed and then got the "reset password" option.

When I went through the reset password steps, I had all the same problems, until I clicked out of the browser and then came back. This time I was sure I remembered the password - and sure enough - signed in successfully.

Has anyone else seen this problem? I mean - I got past it so no biggie, but I thought I ought to report it somewhere....

  13. how do you set/unset htaccess? Also, a new directory in publi_html? Here's what's current: site structure on public_html, to which I would add a folder "new-site" and install the new site...

right now a new folder equals a new subdomain - which I don't want. I'm still not clear about the process.
