Anybody ever figure out what was going on with this behavior? I have "-1" New Messages.

This argument sounds compelling in a vacccum But, in comparison to what TCH already does it is insignificant. Thanks, I've added it to my site. It will be interesting to see how it compares to TCH's stats after some data has been accumulated. Too little cool factor...too much advertisement.
-
Just an up time percentage like "99.983%" but for my purposes it doesn't need to be updated every time the page loads, just once a day would be fine. Again, I think it would be both light on the processor and bandwidth.
-
I'll bet the geniuses (I don't mean that sarcastically) behind the curtain could code something that would serve up a daily updated number. Once daily would eliminate the server burden and doing a number rather than an image would eliminate the bandwidth burden. They just need the right incentive from the Head Guru. Admittedly, this is not a priority, but would be a nice addition when the migration is done. And, if TCH is really proud of their uptime then what better way than to help sites they host show that uptime on their websites?
-
Very nice. And, kudos to TCH for making the uptime reports public. Is there anyway we can put a script/code/what-cha-ma-call-it on our sites showing the yearly uptime stat of our server?

I know you understood what you wrote, but here's what I read..."I would recommend [something magical] but other than that should be no problem. I'm sure it's the simplest thing in the world and that I should understand but could you explain a little more. When doing a fantastico install, I know it asks what folder it wants me to put whatever in, but I don't recall a check box for "use same database" and "use separate database." How do I make certain that I'm using a separate database, or put another way, that I don't accidentally use the same database?
-
Hmmm...I'll have to check that out. Thanks.
-
Well there's nothing wysiwyg about MT!
-
I'm pretty sure the answer is, "no problem." But, is there any problem running on my domain, in their separate folders, multiple MT and multiple WP and multiple forums such as phpBB. I'm guessing there would be no problem with MySQL Databases. However, I don't know a MySQL, from a YourSQL, from a WhoseverSQL. I'm am pretty sure databases have something to do with pixie-dust, gremlins and umpa lumpas. I currently have MT and phpbb, but want to add a subdirectory WP. I've installed WP elsewhere but never where there was already something else. I imagine it's just like when I installed phpbb, just put it in a subfolder and go. Anything to look out for?

Nothing like a reply, four months later. I'd say two primary reasons: 1) Cognitive dissonance. So much about both myself and others became clear when I learned about this concept and how it explains people's apparently irrational thoughts. 2) In using two WP installs and my one MT install, the WP just seems more skittish for lack of a better word. More dropped posts and glitches while editing, it just gives me the feeling for some reason that I'm writing on some AJAX popup instead on "hard" on the screen. I can't explain it well, I just have less confidence in WP. It seems....more flighty, the way the post editor goes back and forth between "visual" and "code" just makes me feel uncomfortable. There's something about the backend performance of WP that is different in a way that I don't' like.

My upgrade went OK. But, it's a pretty small site...really just a test site with only 20 posts, hosted elsewhere on a micro-account. Although, it does have a number of plugins and a non-default, highly modified, theme. Not to be confused with my full awesome MT front-end site hosted with the awesome TCH.

WordPress 2.2 was just released. More info here.

FYI...WordPress 2.2 just came out.

Yes, indeed. To those who have the most important job in the world, happy Mother's Day!

Thanks! I'm pretty proud of it.

In this case, the sound is deceiving, I've no desire to learn more HTML/CSS. Actually, if I won the lottery and could quit my job, I might put it on my list of things to do. Until then, no thanks. A cost benefit analysis of the time and effort I would expend learning such would not be sufficiently offset by the instances I could use such a skill...in my opinion solely as it relates to myself.

My site was originally hosted on server 85 and then on 385 and now on Felucia. I just wanted to report that thing seem a little speedier all around on the new servers, especially email through squirrelmail. Not sure if email is actually hosted on the same server, but what ever you guys are doing I've noticed and improvement and appreciate it. Now don't go and take advantage of all the extra capacity and speed by increasing the number of sites hosted per server, cause if you're thinking about doing that, then I haven't noticed any improvement at all.

Thomas, good points. I should have provided that information since it wasn't clear. My site is a personal family site whose purpose is anything I want it to be, but which has become: 1) update family and friends about my two sons 2) a place for me to vent about things 3) a forum for all people with my same surname 4) a place for me to play around and have fun And, an example of things I like to do, last night I spent 2+ hours adding a "Most Commented" posts section to my MT blog's sidebar. Now, anyone with any programming skills and familiarity with MT could probably have done it in 5 minutes, but I'm not that bright and got over 2 hourse of enjoyment out of it. However, I'm running out of stuff like that to do. For what it's worth, I do have a few extra related domain names, surname.net, surname.us and surname.biz and aren't doing anything with them. The one project I am thinking of, but which is a huge project for for me, is getting Microsoft's Expression Web and converting everything over from FrontPage to EW using style sheets. Right now, if I want to make a change in format to my 30 or so back end pages, I have to change each, one at a time. I suppose I'll have to do that, if I can't find a smaller task which interests me.

Actually, looked at that once, but I couldn't figure out a purpose.

My website has an MT blog front end, a phpBB forum and a bunch of static pages of different stuff. Half the fun is setting things up and getting them to run the way you want and I've got nothing to set up right now, so I'm missing half the fun. I even started another website using WP and then almost instantly abandoned it, realizing I had no time to add posts but, once again, just enjoyed setting it up. I've got pictures on Flickr and am in the process of uploading 50+Gigs of private archives, so I'm not interested in a photo gallery addition. I've got no use for most of the chat like additions that might appeal to the hipper youth. I've thought about setting up my own server with a spare computer, but that's a little outside my comfort zone. I've gone though the Fantastico menu and nothing appeals to me. Any ideas? What can I work on adding to my site that would be fun and cool and semi-useful? Alternatively, what have you all set up on your domains?
-
I am sooo glad I missed seeing this. I'm pretty sure, I would've had the sense to not sign up...but I have my moments of weakness. And, this way my wife will still talk to me.

Depending on what you use the forums for, one option for phpBB is to install the Invitation Only mod or the Invitation Only U2U mod. I have the first one installed and only people I givn an invitation to can join. The U2U mod allows every member to give out invitations. In the year I've had my board up, I've not had a single illigitimate member or spam post. But, obviously, this mod is not for everyone. Alternatively, phpBB version 3.0 should be out later this year, now in Beta5, but soon to be RC1 (Release Candidate 1). It is supposed to be much more secure. One point not yet made...having experimented with a number of providers and having been a complete novice myself when I started out, I can tell you that not only will you pay more for a hosting company geared more towards novices but you will also have a lot fewer capabilities. One prior host of mine was geared toward novices and to hold down support costs they offered their own severely crippled control panel the capabilities of which were a joke compared to cpanel. However, it prevented a complete novice from screwing things up as one can do with cpanel and thus eliminated the associated support necessary to fix/explain things involving cpanel. I've also used another host which offers a few options and controls that TCH doesn't at around the same price...but they have inferior support. TCH's offerings are in a nice sweet spot of price/support/capabilities that few can match. I suggest sticking with TCH while you tough it out work through the learning curve...while the grass is always greener elsewhere, I think you'll be happy hear in the long run.

I'm middle of the road in technical skills for people on the interweb, although I'm the most technically savvy person in my office of 40 people and have been a long time, 3+ year, fan of MT on which my primary blog and front end of my website runs: www.DanzFamily.com MT is more powerful and more customizable. However, I am unable to install, significantly customize or even update MT. I have paid to have all those services done. Recently, I installed (using Fantastico), modified, customized, and perfected two WP installations, one for a friend and a private one for myself. WP is irrefutably much easier to install and customize. Accordingly, despite being a huge MT fan, I would have to say that, absent a compelling reason to use MT, one should go with WP.
