  1. How about a possible newsletter page (a newsletter? hint, hint). The layout and look. I am thinking along the line of an old fashion newspaper layout maybe.... I am thinking about a new custom-made computer!.... :D :D

    [am I eligible???]

  2. If anyone is wondering where Googlebot is... well he is right here! Ever since Head Guru et al. switched to Invision Power Board v1.2 Googlebot has been hanging around... reading and reading. :)

It is true, just look down at the Board Statistics at the bottom of the Forum and you will see Googlebot*, you may also notice his girlfriend Ms. Hot Bot* too. She has been spidering all over us as well!

    Oh yea Dance

  3. Jack's comment is correct, a 301 redirect would be best.... well not best but if you have to do it, best.

I would not recommend it. Can you not create a simple, yet visually appealing and search engine friendly index.html? That would truly be best. ;)

  4. You can never find a good book, if it were in print... it would have outdated material. Remember that the algorithms are being changed all the time.

Not to toot our own horn, but a very good resource is here at Total Choice Web Hosting.

Search Engine Optimization - An Overview

Search Engine Optimization - Web Page Specifics

Search Engine Optimization - Google Elaboration

Pinned Topics in Web Site Promotion

There is also very specific advice within many threads both in 'Web Site Promotion' and 'in Add me to the Family'.

Remember that most advice to one can be applied to many.

Another resource can be specific forums like Webmaster World. However, I warn everybody that most of the information within that forum is inaccurate. You can find some jewels but you can also get yourself into serious trouble (i.e. spamming).

My personal source for the most relevant and up to date information comes out of the major universities (Stanford being my favorite). I try to read all research papers, posters, presentations and even class outlines and notes when I can find them.

  5. If you are serious about obtaining top rankings (and you are using a competitive phrase) then I would recommend paying for submission to Fast, Inktomi and Yahoo. However, I do not recommend this until a site is properly optimized. This would be putting the cart before the horse.

    The proper sequence of events:

    Keyword phrase(s) analysis

    Meta tags

    Page layout

    Body text

    Page tags

    Link Structure

    Then, search engine submission.

  6. You have been added (family - personal).

    SEO thoughts:

    One sentence only:

    ><meta name="description" content="Poetry and Art - a collection of assorted poems about love, loss and life by Stephen Owen.">

    ><meta name="keywords" content="saint52, saint 52, steves poetry, stephen owen, stephen owens poetry, poetry, romantic poetry, love poetry, erotic poetry, poetry forum, poetry forums, love poems, erotic poems, poem forum">

    Reduce to:

    ><meta name="keywords" content="saint52,saint 52, stephen owen,poetry, romantic poetry,love poetry,erotic poetry, love poems, erotic poems, poem forum">

    ><title>Saint52 - poetry, art and me in an easy to use layout for better accessibility</title>

    Change to:

    ><title>Saint52 - poetry including love poetry, romantic poetry and erotic poetry by Stephen Owen</title>

Remove the Amazon link on home page.

Work on getting others to link to your home page.

    Good luck.

  7. PH Jim:

You have been added (nonprofit and informational).

    SEO thoughts.

Your site is in Google's index <_<

You also have a fair number of backlinks :o

    Best advice:

Get rid of the web ring link and amazon link on your index page. Create a different index.html page by placing some 'content' on this page, you know... real text. I would recommend an index with brief descriptions of each topic for this page. This would make a world of a difference on rank.

If you need further clarificaiton or have questions please post here.

    Good luck.

  8. Oh, I did not really answer your question. Sorry.

Yes, once a thread is indexed within our forum it will 'feed' PageRank to any corresponding hyperlinked pages. Keep in mind though, if someone were to manipulate this 'feature' we would consider it spamming and would thus be inclined to alter our policy.

  9. I do not like the term 'hardlinks'. I like to break links up into more descriptive groupings whose contributions affect the linked page differently. I would recommend reviewing Link Structure - Hyperlinks and the Importance of Link Structure

I hear that Google ranks your page by the number of 'hard links' to your site from other sites.

The number of inbound links is one (important) factor affecting PageRank. PageRank is one (important) factor affecting Google page rank. PageRank and page rank are not the same thing.

I would refer you to reviewing Search Engine Optimization - Google Elaboration

    Hope this helps.

  10. Could you please do whatever you did to get my page with this new link to your company ranked?

Your site will be picked up by Google next time it spiders our family pages. Try to get more pages to link to your own home page, this will insure that you reach a certain threshold with Google to merit indexing.

    Good luck.

  11. webgyrl:

What you are doing could (and will) be dangerous.

... but all with their own domain name that points to the identitymusicgroup.com/index.htm page.

This is a form of spamming which will be easily identified and result in rank penalty. I am speaking strictly in terms of search engines. Not sure of your specific situation but in general, search engine rank is the most important factor for generating 'real' visitors to any commercial site.

There are several reads here that might be worth reviewing.

I would start with the pinned threads under Web Site Promotion. Start at the bottom and work your way up (be sure to follow all links).

    Hope this helps.

  12. Matman I am not so sure. There statement

Accordingly, if you would like to use any images you have found through our service, we advise you to contact the site owner to obtain the requisite permissions.
explicitly states that one should obtain permission to 'use any images'.

This is a direct contradiction to what they call as 'our service'. A database of copywritten images created via hotlinking for the sole purpose of adding 'value' to their service definitely is more then just 'viewing them on the web'.

Are there any copyright restrictions associated with the images?

The images identified by the Google Image Search service may be protected by copyrights. Although you can locate and access the images through our service, we cannot grant you any rights to use them for any purpose other than viewing them on the web. Accordingly, if you would like to use any images you have found through our service, we advise you to contact the site owner to obtain the requisite permissions.

Do not get me wrong, I do not mind my own images within their index and I use their database extensively but they are definitely being hypocritical.

  13. I find any conversation on copyright law and the Internet very interesting. On the Internet (or other media for that matter), as soon as you create an original work, it is copyrighted. This includes images, scripts, text content and even page layout.

This is true even if a page is not identified with the ubiquitous 'Copyright © 2003 by Somebody - All rights reserved'. I do recommend use of the copyright statement though in aiding in warnings to others who you may feel are infringing on your work.

Now to address the specific issue of hotlinking... this is the one I find most interesting. The largest abuser of this is obviously Google with their 'Google Images', they hotlink everyone!

I find it very interesting that they state from their very own site:

Are there any copyright restrictions associated with the images?

The images identified by the Google Image Search service may be protected by copyrights. Although you can locate and access the images through our service, we cannot grant you any rights to use them for any purpose other than viewing them on the web. Accordingly, if you would like to use any images you have found through our service, we advise you to contact the site owner to obtain the requisite permissions.

In addition they have this for those that would like their images removed:

Remove an image from Google's Image Search

Option 1: If you have access to the server that hosts your image or the site's webmaster:

If you need an image removed from Google's image index we require participation either by you or by the site's webmaster. Please add a robots.txt file to the root of the server. (If you can't put it in the server root, you can put it at directory level.)

Example: If your site is www.yoursite.com/images/dogs.jpg and you want Google to exclude the dogs.jpg image found on your site, you need to create a page called www.yoursite.com/robots.txt and on this page you need to place the following text:

    User-agent: Googlebot-Image

    Disallow: /images/dogs.jpg

To remove all the images on your site from our index, place the following robots.txt file in your server root:

    User-agent: Googlebot-Image

    Disallow: /

This is the standard protocol that most web crawlers observe for excluding a web server or directory from an index. More information on robots.txt is available here: http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/norobots.html.

  14. I do not recommend any automated submission service or software. It actually can be very dangerous... provoke spamming filters which can result in penalty or all out removal from index.

Just go to Site Management, and under that look for "Search Engine Submit" and there you go.

This includes use of cPanel's 'Search Engine Submit'.

This subject has been addressed in our site's search engine optimization pages under search engine submission.
