1. Well I was going to show via a 'm3avrck' Google search but you are too new here (not yet indexed). You are on forums.devshed.com though.

However, for here, how about Head Guru?

So, we do give sites 'credit' and thus discriminate certain links.

As for submitting to the smaller search engines automatically, do you consider this a bad thing?

No, I would not categorize it as 'bad'. I just have a general policy of not recommending it. That would be based on many factors including the one you are eluding too.

  2. M3avrk:

I edited you post to remove the direct link. Sorry, but we are pretty picky about who we direct link to (even in these forums).

I will say that this is not a bad reference (and there are a lot that are!)... there is some usefull information that our family members can benefit from. Not all the information is accurate (e.g. Google, updates on a 4 week cycle). However, the site is not promoting spam techniques and does contain a lot of usual inforamtion, so I have no problem reccomending the reference. Thank you for finding it.

I would like to add, that I do not reccomend any automatic submit program (even to the smaller indecies). They do clearly state "...it does not autosubmit to the major indexes..." which is good (i.e. they understand the process).

I am very critical in analyisis so the 'good' things I am saying about this site should be noted. However, for a site that is marketed for web site promotioin, they certainly are not ranked very well (they have a Google PageRank of 2 :D ).

  3. Dmoz is a whole different ballgame.

First, each time you submit you are bounced to the bottom of the queue. Think about this, maybe each time your were just about to be 'looked at' and then you resubmitted and automatically got bumped all the way to the bottom. Therefore, only submit once.

A real person reviews all sites; if your particular area is large... can take longer then 8 months (the editors are very overworked).

  4. Joecav:

You have been added to our Extended Family - Commercial Sites page :(

You need to do some 'brush-up' reading and employ some of the suggestions that have been put forth here at Total Choice Web Hosting concerning optimization. Many of the basics have not been covered and an evaluation at this time would not do you justice. Start with the pinned threads within Web Site Promotion (start at the bottom and work you way up). Make sure you follow all the links (e.g. to Search Engine Optimization - An Overview).

When you feel you have incorporated these suggestions, post back on this thread and then we will get to your evaluation.

    Happy reading

  5. I smell scam... and I have a noise like my chocolate lab.

When your keyword or phrase is entered your page will automatically open up and your competitors site will not. This new system doesn't allow anyone to "outbid" you. You own your keyword(s) or phrase(s) for a full year.
You can choose which search engines they operate on like Google, MSN, AOL, Yahoo and more, plus you can even choose regions within the search engines.

Show me one example of a 'page automatically opening up' when clicking on a search phrase using 'Google, MSN, AOL or Yahoo'? Does not happen.

  6. Jim:

You have been added to our Extended Family - Commercial Sites page :D

Regarding your link to us: great visual thank you for the plug! I would love to see

    >Jim Sewell Computing Solutions uses Total Choice Hosting and recommends...

    changed to

    >Jim Sewell Computing Solutions uses web hosting by Total Choice Hosting and recommends...

It would make a difference, thanks.

  7. I thought you put keywords in your web page and when peeps searched for those words...poof...your website came up. Magic!

Well it would work that way if there were not so many darn pages!

For example, if we do a Google search using the phrase 'Sales Leads', we find that there are 2.21 million pages in the Goggle index for this specific phrase. Now Google has written these sophisticated algorithms to 'rank' these pages in order of relevancy.

Relevancy is defined by many different visual and non-visual characteristics of a web page (and site). Proper optimization maximizes the rank of a given page/site for a particular search phrase(s) (e.g. 5th instead of number 2,209,999th for say 'sales leads' :P ).

As others have suggested, there is quite a bit of information right here at Total Choice Web Hosting. Make sure you read all the pinned topics within this forum (Web Site Promotion), that will give you a good start.

[P.S. Saw a typo on you 'Why Us' page: Companies Who Needs Our Services]

  8. A family member asks:

I have a huge website that I split over about 5 subdomains, now I wish to redo the entire website and remove the subdomains.

Now since I can't just press restart on the googlebot, is it there advisiable to do 301 for every single page and have it point back to my index or do i need to do it so that all pages are 301 to there new page names?

What happens with subdomains? can I do a 301 for subdomains?

    Thanks!

  9. Yahoo had been using Inktomi for their business service side prior to the purchase. It was a logical purchase to cash in on a service they were already providing (i.e. Inktomi's existence had a lot to do with Yahoo). Overture place their Pay Per Click (PPC) listings on top of Inktomi results. This 'arrangement' meant that Overture partners received a share of the PPC fees but had to pay monthly licensing fees for Inktomi results. Yahoo was obviously the biggest partner in the arrangement. Buying both meant that they no longer had the 'expense' of a middleman and in turn reap the awards of paid inclusion.

Therefore, this was a strategic business move, which affect the paid inclusions. How this will affect the free search results is unclear at this point. It makes sense that all are scared of the power that Google has acquired in a relatively short period of time. However, Google has a beautifully branded product that offers arguably the best search engine results. It will be interesting how Yahoo weighs the threat vs. the benefit of such an association. Time will tell.

I might add that I am not a proponent of paid inclusion. The following quote from Yahoo's CEO concerns me:

"The acquisition enables Yahoo! to integrate world-class technology throughout the network as well as offer more value to consumers and businesses through programs such as paid inclusion, which provide higher- quality commercial search results."

I feel that 'higher-quality' commercial search results should be based on relevancy not 'highest bid'. If Google can maintain their dominance on relevancy, we all benefit!

[p.s. Google/Yahoo contract is up in September 2003.]

  10. SCAVENGER HUNT... not bad. We could have one just right here in the forum. Clues/riddles could be given for information that is already here.... among the 21821+ posts. That could actually be fun, but it would take a heap of work to plan.

  11. Well I did a search for 'Most popular searches on Yahoo! over the last 24 hours:' and came up with a few more but all were related to the site you referenced.

No, this is not a 'trick'. Look at the pages that have used this, how are the ranked... pretty poorly is what I saw.

I have no idea why anyone would want to add extra text (unrelated no less) to a site. There you have a hint regarding SEO of a page.... concise is best. :D
