Don't know how else to ask, but I just moved over to TCH and I'm having problems with my SMF forum. The forum is up and running just fine, but for some reason I keep getting this error:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /forums/index.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

This happens anytime I want to modify member's permissions or add a new board/modify them. Also occurs any time I want to view the current Theme's settings.

Can someone tell me what I'm missing?

Many thanks.

Most likely your forums/index.php file doesn't have the necessary permissions. Make sure that all users have read permissions on that file so the webserver is able to read the file.

Let us know if that's not the problem and I can come up with some other things to look at.

I checked all permissions, I have several themes and found the mayority didn't have permissions, but even after correcting this, I still have the same issue. The default index has all necessary permissions as well...

Very strange indeed. It does seem to be a permissions issue. You're sure you checked permissions on everything? Have you run an error check on the database (through SMF's admin panel)? If nothing else, perhaps you should schedule some downtime, take a backup of the db, remove the SMF installation and re-create the db, install clean, and upload the backed-up db and see if that has any effect.

Edit: While I'm not a mod, I should give you a friendly reminder that "bumping" a topic is not allowed on these forums.

Welcome to the forums Reality_Burst. I second trying a clean install and uploading a backed up database. Please understand that while we have users that use SMF here, they are not on all of the time, so just because there has not been an answer in two hours does not mean that there is no answer. Please have some patience and yes, Aaron is right, there is no need to bump the thread.

LOL.
Thank you both, I will try that again.
I did last night and it failed miserably.
Not trying to bump a thread, just trying to see if anyone was out there at the moment that would have a clue as to what I'm missing.
I'm sure not everyone gets to read every thread there is.
I'll post my results when I try again.
Cheers.

I'm tired right now, so please bare with me...This is what I did:

ran a db check through sql, all was fine.
did the same through the smf admin panel; nothing found...

backed up db of current members and settings.
deleted all themes except default.
removed smf db.
remove forum folder.
recreated smf db.
added myself as user, with all priveledges.
recreated the forum folder.
uploaded smf.zip file.
extracted files into forum folder.
did a fresh instal.
placed forum in maintenance mode.
restored backup.
accessed forum, prompted to sign in.
denied my current user name.
went back to the previous user name; logged in.

Received messege: "The default theme's directory is wrong, please correct it by clicking this text. "

clicked on text and I get: "Forbidden - You don't have permission to access /forums/index.php on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

added my now previous user name to the db (with all priveledges) and checked all indexes in forum folder, all permissions set.
tried to click on the default theme's directory error and I still get the forbidden access error.
i get the same error when accessing the current theme's settings or trying to modify any permissions for members/guests.

Now...What did I miss? Did I screw up somewhere?

Welcome to the forum, Reality_Burst. :)

If you did a clean install and the errors shows up anyway, it sounds to me something is wrong in the installation package (zip file). I would download a fresh copy of it and try to install from that new package. If that fails, check out the SMF forum located here, there might be someone else who had this problem.

I'll see if anyone has an idea there as well.

Thank you for the response and welcome. :)

Reality_Burst, when you say it's the newest package, do you mean SMF 1.0.5, or the newest beta? Because I haven't seen this problem (personally) in 1.0.5.

If you do a fresh install without restoring your backup, do you still get the error, or is it only after you restore your backup that the error starts happening? (sorry, I dropped offline last night).

Whew! I finally got the problem fixed! You guys have been great! Turns out it was an issue with the urls within the index. I had to run the repair script that smf provides and had it repair all urls. I'm on v1.0.5 and well here's what I've got.

Again, many thanks to all of you and your welcomes! :)

Welcome to the forums smile2me :rolleyes1:

Apparently the problem was with internal URLs and he found the script over at the SMF site.

Turns out it was an issue with the urls within the index. I had to run the repair script that smf provides and had it repair all urls.
