makaveli
ok so finally i have a new pc, when i bought it i was told "have a cdr ready" to make a backup as we dont do restore disks. how do i make one? on a slight tangent i think it is annoying that microsoft or the other PC makers wont ship a simple recovery disk with pc's yes piracy is naughty and windows is expensive blah blah blah. but you have spent £300+ (or $600+) on a new machine! Apple still give you boot discs anyways im verging onto a rant and provoking a debate, not getting my question across? any ideas how to make a backup disk Thanks in advance
TCH-Bruce
There should be software on your new PC that will make you a set of recovery discs. My HP prompted me if I wanted to do it yet or delay doing it until a later date. Couple days later it prompted me again and I made them. And I agree, I don't like that they do not provide you with discs when you purchase. If you want them find a vendor that supplies them with the purchase. Like Dell. Madmanmcp
yeah, id of thought though a backup disc isnt the "full monty" just the "bare bones" to get your little 'puter back into this world? What manufacturers do is provide you with a disk image that will return your computer back to "factory default". Its a standard procedure now and almost any computer you buy does the same thing. It gives you the option to create the disks now or later and in most cases people opt to do it later and never do What you need to do is to read the instructions that came with the computer and it will explain what needs to be done. They will tell you how many CD's (or DVD's) it will take and tell you where the program is to be started later, its usually under ACCESSORIES. You run the program, insert the disks into the drive and when it asks for another you just keep replacing with addoitional blank disk. Label them the way the program tells you. Once completed be sure to store in a safe place where you can find them later.
makaveli
can't find a image disk, the hdd is partitioned (6gb) as a backup, could that be an equivalent. this is a little embarrasing, i used to be into the "tech" side of things, but just try and stick to software and design these days. im still "handy with a mouse" though
Madmanmcp
can't find a image disk, the hdd is partitioned (6gb) as a backup, could that be an equivalent. Yes, but why are you trying to find it? That is the "Restore partition" and that can be used to also restore the computer back to factory default. But if you lose the hard drive this cannot be used, that is why you need to run the program supplied that will copy this image onto a CD or a DVD. Madmanmcp
Did you read the manual and check the other paperwork that came with the computer? If you can't find it then call the manufacturer that made it, they should be able to tell you where it is. Did you purchase blank CD's or DVD's yet? What make and model is it? Maybe someone here has it and can help.
TCH-Bruce
Is the computer brand new? Is it a name brand computer or did you buy a PC that someone built? If the latter check with the person that built it. If the former check their website. Sometimes you can order a recovery set of disks. TCH-Don
You might look under start > all programs > system recovery > recovery media creator
