Thanks Bob. :)

Just a little sidenote regarding what I read in other medias today...

RTM = Released To Manufacturers, so SP3 will only be available on new computers at the moment. It will come available on Windows Update and the MS Download center on April 29.

When SP2 was released MS would send a free disk if you ordered it from them. I think there was a small S&H charge. I sure hope they will offer SP3 on that same type of deal.

youneverknow

I always order one of these...it saves me tons of time. I'm always restoring a PC back to original for folks and this saves me hours in downloading all the patches and updates. Its well worth the $9.95 ... for me at least :)

Madmanmcp...if you find the ordering link could you pass it on here? I have search MS and don't see anything yet.

Thanks, youneverknow

Just re-read this post and see that it will not be available until the 29th

Naw T1 line at home 20/1500 wont take but a few minutes to download it.

I have FIOS and get 15...but the real issue is when I am not at home and I'm using a slow Internet connection elsewhere. This is worth the price for awhile. At some point in the future it becomes another issue because of all the additional patches and upgrades you need to download after this CD was made.

Rumours now says that Service Pack 3 will not be available on Windowsupdate today due to some compability issues Microsoft wants to solve first, but it should come available on their Download center today.

Personally I can wait since Swedish won´t be available until middle of next week.

Here is an old schedule I found.

Q: When will Microsoft ship XP SP3?

A: Microsoft finalized Windows XP Service Pack 3 on April 21, 2008 and will release it publicly to the Web on April 29, 2008.

Here's the complete Windows XP SP3 release schedule:

RTM (release to manufacturing): April 21

Windows Update (optional update): April 29

Microsoft Download Center: April 29

MSDN/TechNet download: May 2

Windows XP SP3 fulfillment media (CD-based): May 19

Volume license customers download: June 1

Windows Update/Automatic Updates: June 10

Now that the April 29th date has been delayed, I don't know if the others will slip backwards as well.

Thomas,

I have just checked the Windows Update and SP3 is still not available through it at this time. Its something I am currently checking most days to see if it is there, but still no luck at the moment Im afraid.

Thanks Zac. :)

Since I don´t really have any urgent need (yet) for the huge swedish package which should be available tomorrow on MS download center, I guess I will have to find something else to do tomorrow then instead of visiting Windows update. :lol2:

I downloaded and intalled SP3 on Wed April 30th. They must have taken it off after that. Probably a glich that I will need to fix. From the MS update page it took about 7 minutes to download and about 10 or 15 to intall. All is well so far :lol2:

same here, no apparent problems yet...everything is running fine.

I'll keep my fingers crossed and keep an eye out for any weird symptoms my PC may have.

I couldn't find a place to order yet, but I did find this link. Its a download of an image file or "ISO" which is used to create a CD/DVD. I'll take a look at it tomorrow and see how it installs.

They do recommend that you use the Windows Update to install...</end disclaimer>.

I installed SP3 last night, using Windows Update. Everything seems to work fine, and so far there are no surprises except:

Every time that I type the word Microsoft, the text is emphasized. What's up with that. :)

I finally got my SP3 installed as well using Windows Update. Turns out I was having a problem that has existed since at least as far back as when SP2 was released...something that was preventing a smooth install. After a little research (gotta love the Google), the SP3 install went smoothly.

I expect my troubles were related less to SP3 and more to some configuration issues on my machine.

No Thomas, but thanks anyway. I saw that but that is the "Network Instalation" package used if you want to install on another PC across a Network. One of the options MS use to provide was a DVD/CD version you could order in advance, pay around 10 bucks for "Shipping and Handling". With the slow dialup connections some folks had and the large size of these service packs it was easier to pay for a disk.

but I just figured this might be as close you might come this time (thinking of Bruces burning it to a DVD post above in thread).

The link I posted is the one that is usually exactly like the CD they mail out. Its an image file and when you open it in a burning program it will burn an exact image of the CD/DVD with all files and folders that are needed for installing SP3. I've used it on 2 PC's already and will be doing a couple more today since I'm home for a week recovering from Heel surgery (bonespur).

I am now using SP3 and it appears to be causing me no issues, thank goodness. I checked it out on a tinyurl site then it linked me to the Windows Update to download it. Downloaded, Installed, no issues ... Very happy indeed.

  • 2 months later...

I finally ordered the service pack 3 CD from MS...here is the North American order link

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

About 1/3rd of the way down on that page is "how to obtain SP3" and then follow the links

Cost was $3.99 plus $5.99 shipping and handling.

If you ever need to re-install xp on any computer the service pack will save you time because all the updates and patches for the last 4 or 5 years are on the disk. If I update xp through xp update service, it can take a very long time.

I think there have been over 100 updates and patches you won't have to download from MS update site....so this CD can be a real time saver.
