#253314 Scam Alert :: Unlimited Hosting

Posted by TCH-Blog on 19 March 2014 - 10:23 AM

In the market for a new web hosting account? If so,chances are, you will not have a hard time finding a new host for your website. In fact, you will, most likely, end up facing a plethora of choices. The largest scam in our industry is the “unlimited hosting” plans. It is time we debunk them and expose the liars in the web hosting industry.

You do not need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that servers can not actually host anything unlimited. That would be like saying youriPod can store an unlimited amount of Justin Bieber songs. We all know that it simply is not possible. These web host that claim to offer unlimited bandwidth and disk space are hiding behind their Fair Use Policy and are out right liars. They are overselling. This is the act of sellinghosting plansto clients and banking on the fact that the clients will not use the space and bandwidth. Furthermore, if the client starts using to much then the host can use their Fair Use Policy and kick the client to the curb.

If you do your research, you will notice that each overselling web host claims to offer unlimited hosting, but only as per the terms of its ‘Fair Use Policy’ – which, by the way, is often different from the Terms of Use.

Before signing up for these unlimited plans, it is critical that you look into the terms thatapply to these accounts. I took some time to go out and look at some web hosts that offer unlimited plans. It is shocking to see the lies these hosts spew out to their customers. These are just a few limitations that can be found in their terms of service ;

  • Using a shared account as a backup/storage device is not permitted.
  • Any shared account using more than 20 gigs of disk space will be removed from our off site weekly backup.
  • Run cron entries with intervals of less than 15 minutes
  • The use of more than 25,000 inodes on any shared account may potentially result in a warning first, and if no action is taken future suspension. Every file (a webpage, image file, email, etc) on your account uses up 1 inode.
  • Use 25% or more of system resources for longer then 30 seconds is prohibited.
  • Broadcast or Streaming of Live Sporting Events is prohibited.
  • Commercial Audio Streaming prohibited.

Really? I thought this was unlimited everything. Unlimited disk space as long as I dont store to many files, or you will suspend me and stop taking backups? Due dilligence, walk lightly and choose a host that does not hide behind its false promises, lies and its Terms of Service or Fair Use Policy. Determine what you will be using and find a host that will give you your desired services for a reasonable price.

We have put together a video that we hope better explains this entire Unlimited Myth and hope you enjoy watching it.

#27497 Setting Up A Web Page Redirect

Posted by TCH-Sales on 21 August 2003 - 04:42 PM

Setting up a web page redirect is really easy. The simplest way would be to just to do it through your cPanel. You can also do it by editing your .htaccess file in the directory you are working in.

How to set up a cPanel redirect
  • Log into your cPanel, and look for "Redirects" under Site Management
  • Put in the current directory into the first box
  • Put the new directory in the second box
  • Choose the type (temporary or permanent)
  • Click "Add" and you're done!
To remove it, just choose on the same screen to remove it and you're good as gold! It's just that easy!

How to set up a .htaccess redirect
Redirect 301 /example/test.html http://www.yoursite.com/newlocation/newpage.html
Cut and paste this code into your .htaccess file. "Redirect 301" means that it is a permanent redirect. You can change it to "Redirect 302" for a temporary redirect. If you have no number, then it will default to a temporary (302) redirect. Change the "/example/test.html" to your old location. Then put your new location in where it says "http://www.yoursite..../newpage.html". You're done!

Either method is really simple and should get the job done.

If I understand your question correct, you should be able to fix this using the "Php select" option in your cpanel.

#255339 The Unlimited Game

Posted by TCH-Blog on 07 October 2015 - 05:05 PM

Web Site running slow? Maybe your unlimited hosting is not really unlimited!

Choosing the right hosting company to host your business or personal web site can be a daunting task. So many Hosting companies in the market place are misrepresenting their services by offering unlimited hosting.

Truth of the matter is Unlimited Hosting does not exist. It is a sales gimmick to lure customers in by offering them everything for little or nothing. In reality, everything has a limit. These unscrupulous hosts bet on the fact that the vast majority of the clients that they trick into signing up with them will in fact never use very many resources. The clients that use a lot of resources are kicked to the curb and terminated without notice. This is done by citing the Terms of Service (TOS) which spells out in very fine terms what can be used. This is a highlight from a TOS from such a company:

10.2. Enforced resource limits for shared and reseller packages:
10% CPU Usage
5% Memory Usage (or 512 MB)
50 Running Processes
15 Minute Max Execution Time
100,000 Total Inodes
500 outgoing email messages per 60 minute period (all excess messages will be discarded and not delivered)

This is horrible considering the fact that when these poor clients signed up for service they were told everything was unlimited. At TotalChoice we do not place limits on our clients, because we do NOT oversell our servers. Unlimited hosts can stay in business because they depend on people not using the resources that they purchase. At TCH we want our clients to use the resources they bought and we leave it on the table for them to use at any time they need. This is why our hosting packages are very defined and the client knows what they are buying, it is their money after all.

Choose wisely my friends.

Happy Hosting

I am directing a friend here to get his own plan so wanted to know for him.

Thanks!   Rick

Thanks Bruce.   I created the ticket as you requested and they accommodated this request.   They were able to create a server-wide exception to spam@mxguarddog.com.   Now I can  report the false-positives.

#253733 Wordpress Attack

Posted by jberg on 20 July 2014 - 07:04 PM

I was wondering if anyone has some advice to help stop Brute Force Attack on a Wordpress site on a TCH shared hosting account? I have installed a couple plugins to help stop the problem but even using the Limited Login plugin, I still have some sites that get continual failed logins from different IP's every fraction of a second.

I have seen other hosting companies sometimes will use a protection CAPTCHA by creating a simple .htaccess authentication login for the wp-login.php file. So when trying to login into Wordpress you get the popup that asks for username/password and generally will indicate what the username/password  is right in the text of the popup. For example it will say.. Username: adfw3 Password: result of math 33+5. These are mainly to slow down the bots that try to login in every fraction of a second from different IPs.

Would anyone know how to implement this on a TCH shared hosting account? I tried to make it work by adding it to the .htaccess file and referencing a passwd file in the .htpasswds but that didn't work.

created a user login in .htpasswds (through Cpanel). Then reference it in the main .htaccess file in public_html/.

<Files wp-login.php>

AuthType basic
AuthName "WordPress attack protection CAPTCHA. Enter username: adfw3 Password: The result of math 33+5"
AuthBasicProvider file
AuthUserFile "/home/accountname/.htpasswds/public_html/wp-admin/passwd"

But this doesn't make the pop-up appear for login, and just goes right to wp-login.php. Am I doing something wrong or is there a better way?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

#253489 Not Getting Mail

Posted by TCH-Dick on 12 May 2014 - 05:24 PM

You can verify your email configuration in your cPanel. Once you are logged into your cPanel, locate the "Mail" section then click on the "Email Accounts" icon. Once on the Email Accounts page, locate your email address and select the "More" drop-down, then click on "Configure Email Account". You will then be presented with several configuration options. Make sure you looking at the "Manual Settings" section, you do not want to use the auto-configure for an existing account in your mail client.

Concerning the sporadic mail issues, it is best to contact our support team at https://support.totalchoicehosting.com . They can review your mail logs and the server for any issues, as well as offer guidance on any errors you have received from hotmail.

#253425 Openssl - Heartbleed Vulnerability

Posted by TCH-Dick on 11 April 2014 - 01:01 AM

Just some additional information for any that does choose to have their cert reissued(that purchased from us).

After contacting us the following steps will occur:

  • We will generate a new Certificate Signing Request (CSR) and Private Key, which will be used to reissue and install the new certificate.
  • We will have to verify domain ownership again, how long this takes will depend on the certificate type. Most will be within in an hour.
  • Once verified, the certificate is reissued and we will reinstall the new certificate.
  • The old certificate will then be automatically revoked  within 12 to 24 hours after being reissued. Correction: This only applies to a small percentage of certificates through us. If you have a Comodo certificate from us, your serial number will need to be recorded and we will have to manually revoke it.

Update from our admin team, this only affected 28% of our shared servers. If you want to know if your servers was affected or not, you can run the simple php script I have attached here.

#253328 Crazy Eddie Sale :: Reseller Web Hosting 50% Off

Posted by TCH-Blog on 22 March 2014 - 02:03 PM

TotalChoice has been in the web hosting for over 14 years now. During this time we have never offered many sales on our products. Sure we would do an occasional sale but nothing like what we are going to offer for the next 30 days on our reseller plans.

Has TCH gone totally insane? Well not really. To be honest, we overbuilt our infrastructure and have quite a bit of reseller server space available. Yea, we went crazy building new servers, but hey those things can happen when dealing with new technology.

These must be cheapo servers, overloaded with users and hosting unlimited domains, right? No not so fast, these are the same servers we sold yesterday. In fact, lets us talk about what these servers have under the hood, shall we? Each server has 16 cores of amazingly fast AMD Opteron 3.2ghz CPU power. We use the fastest storage devices available and place all the drives into a very fast and reliable RAID 10 Raid Container. Couple this with very fast 1800Mhz ECC RAM and these servers are poised to provide our clients with the fastest, most responsive web sites on the planet. Take no prisoners here guys, these servers are the real deal. No desktop hardware that wants to grow up and be a server one day.

No oversellingallowed! 4,000 domains on a server? Not at TCH. We limit our reseller servers to 15 clients each. Period. This allows every reseller server plenty of overhead and space to grow. I dare you to ask any host to reveal how many accounts they place on reseller servers, I know what the answer would be. Web Hosting has become a industry of deceit and scam. Well not here at TCH. We oversell nothing and do not offer unlimited anything. Unless you count the support tickets, why yes those are offered unlimited style.

Your reseller account will allow you to host as many domains as will fit within your space and bandwidth. You will have full access to a reseller version of WHM (web hosting manager). To even bolster on that, every domain that you add to your reseller account will be assigned its very own cPanel login. The TCH reseller accounts are a full blown gateway to becoming a Web Hosting Provider. In fact we even give your reseller account its own space. This is unheard in this business.

TCH is proud of our history, our service levels and our hosting products. Why take a chance with these other companies that hide behind their Terms of Service when you can host with an Industry Leader. Yes. you can trust TCHtoday and in the future.

To obtain your 50% discount on the Reseller Plans use the following coupon code at check out :: crazyeddie

Please note, these coupons are for new clients only and only one coupon per new client may be used. Discount is valid as long as you keep that package and can not be applied to downgrades or upgrades. Offer expires 04/22/2014

#253120 Won't Go Anywhere Else...........

Posted by chip on 19 January 2014 - 03:13 AM

Just wanted to take a minute or two to thank Bill and his support staff for another great job. My dedicated server started to throw errors and became unavailable multiple time in the wee hours of the morning. A RAID rebuild was in progress. The server was valiant in its attempts to fix itself but surcumbed to the inevitable, a hard crash. The support team was already aware and watching the rebuild but when I submitted a support ticket because I couldn't access the server anymore, they sprang into action. Unfortunately it was a major failure which required new hardware and a total reinstall of the operating system and user files. It took several hours for this to be completed and I am back up running full steam ahead.

For those of you who have not experienced this before with other providers, this is amazing! Hosting providers I have used prior to TCH would have taken 24-48 hours to do the work Bill and his team did in just a few hours. Those that have experienced this know exactly what I am talking about and that I presume is why you are with TCH.

#252850 Which Version Of Php?

Posted by TCH-Alex on 01 December 2013 - 12:34 PM

Please note both php 5.2 and 5.3 are installed on your server, where php 5.3 is the default. You have choose to use php 5.2 on your account through .htaccess Mime type selection and you just need to remove or comment out the mime type entry from .htaccess on order to switch the account to php 5.3

I have replied to your ticket too.

We are still working some server issues, but this only accounts for < 1% of our client base.

As Mike stated drop us a ticket if your having issues still, we will see the tickets faster than we will see anything you post here.

Thanks for your support during this serious issue at TCH.

#251550 Cpanel Fantastico Software Updates

Posted by TCH-Dick on 10 February 2013 - 04:50 PM

We understand the frustration with Fantastico and to be completely honest have consider replacing it over the past year. However, we chose to hold off for the next major version which starts its beta in the coming week. We are looking forward to testing this new version as it "makes it possible to upgrade as soon as a script update is provided by the script developer". This means we can roll things out from our end without having to wait on Fantastico to provide us with updates.

We will keep everyone updated once we have full access to the new version and have done some testing.
