Hi

I currently have a reseller account but I'm starting to look into VPS and whether there are good reasons for me to go into that.

So, a few questions about TC managed VPS -

1) With cPanel/WHM am I right in thinking that multiple domain names can be hosted, much like reseller  (Use WHM to create new, and cPanel to manage each)

2) If so, what differences are there between hosting multiple domains in a reseller account, and in managed VPS?

3) In managed VPS, do I need to be responsible for server security / are there further requirements of me to be able to run the VPS?

4) On managed VPS are there more technical requirements from me, or does the 'managed' part of it mean the technical knowledge required it much the same as running reseller?

Sorry if these are basic questions but I can't find the details about what differences there are between managed VPS and reseller apart from having more access to server-level things if required.

One further question - in both VPS and reseller on TC, how separated are domains ie is it possible for hackers to hack one domain account and do directory traversal or something else, to gain access to another account, or is there essentially complete separation between each Cpanel account?

cheers

...stu

Correct.

There are no differences in the hosting part. With a VPS server, you get more control of the server, like SSH access, php versions, modules or other configurations that cannot be accomodated on a shared hosting environment, IP whitelists etc. In general terms, you can get it customized to your needs.

3) In managed VPS, do I need to be responsible for server security / are there further requirements of me to be able to run the VPS?

We will be taking care of server side security. But we always recommend that the server owner is knowledgeable on cpanel / whm etc. Keeping accounts and code updated, secured and backups are entirely on the server owner.

4) On managed VPS are there more technical requirements from me, or does the 'managed' part of it mean the technical knowledge required it much the same as running reseller?

As mentioned on question 2, it is almost the same, except that you get more control over the server.

Let me know if you have further questions

VPS and reseller servers create the accounts in the very same way. If you are maintaining separate accounts and not just creating addon accounts (which creates accounts inside the main one), then the possibility of a hacker getting in to one account and traversing to others is very unlikely. It really depends on how the accounts are setup, whether they are all updated and secured, passwords are strong and frequently rotated etc.

Hi Bala, and thanks for those answers. That all seems to make sense to me.

One more question - When I look at both the reseller and the VPS plans  (basic reseller and Silver VPS) which are both similar prices (in fact VPS is a little cheaper), the VPS plan seems way better value in disk space and bandwidth.  Are there any disadvantages with VPS or is there something I'm missing in comparing them (given that I have some experience with WHM and cPanel from already running the reseller account and so it sounds like I could handle a managed VPS without problem).

Would it make sense for me to move my (approx 15) domains from a reseller to a VPS or would there be a performance hit?

Performance will depend on which VPS you are signing up and the content of your sites that will be hosted on the vps server. Our shared servers are huge builds with plenty of RAM and processor cores. To host 15 domains, I would recommend that you go for the gold plan.
