ericwilmoth
Hi--I'm working on setting up a blog on my site...actually I'm returning to the process after abandoning it months ago. Back then i loaded wordpress since several threads seemed to strongly recommend it, and now that I'm coming back to it things are moving smoothly enough, but i dipped back into fantastico just to refresh my memory of what all is in there, and realized there's two other blog services linked, b2evolution & Nucleus. Does anyone here use these or have experience comparing them with Word Press? I'd like to get a sense for how these rate before i invest myself deeply into wordpress. Thanks! TCH-Bruce
While I'd be interested in what others say about b2 and Nucleus I am a proponent of WordPress and probably wouldn't switch away from it.
ericwilmoth
As i poked around more with Word Press i have to say, I'm incredibly shocked at the poorly thought out navigation of their site. There is so much confusing and redundant link arrangements that my head was spinning just barely scratching the surface. I'll be honest, that alone is making me about ready to say screw it and go with Blogger. Has anybody else in here found the Word Press site as confusing, and is there anyone here who can give me a good reason why it might be worth it to deal with such headaches over going with a service like Blogger? TCH-Bruce
Can't say that I bother with the WordPress site. With the exception of installation instructions and the occasional searching of their support forum I never go there. The WordPress plugin site wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ and themes site themes.wordpress.net/ are all you actually need to use WordPress. But if you need more there are many sites dedicated to WordPress as a simple Google search will show.
ericwilmoth
I realize i can get a basic blog up and running with little poking around, but Ultimately I'm looking for complete customization, have no experience with php and no money to hire someone who does. The tutorials i was finding on line kept dragging me down various rabbit holes that eventually became too mired in assumed knowledge that i did not posses (or didn't appear to work the way they said they would), so i was hoping the actual wordpress site could help...but of course it is the biggest rats nest of a site when it comes to actual navigation. I actually found links in there that talk about good navigation and had to cackle with fury at the thought of anyone there ever taking the time to employ their own advice. I'm sure all reading this will think me MAD...and they won't be far from the truth...but i was possessed with a raw compulsion to actually recreate their site navigation in a personal document and essentially eliminate their redundancies--which i shudder to recall--and reorganize them in some fashion a human being can actually make sense of. It took a number of hours of raw determination and absolute piss and vinegar, but i finally have something that is streamlined, concise and easy to understand at a glance. If I'm feeling nice i may even send it to the administrators there as a suggested structure; i already complained to them via their 'Kvetch' link. TCH-Derek
Hello Eric, Personally, I am also one of the many WordPress fans out there. Some of the things I like about WordPress is the ability to find or make a theme, edit it to your preferences and then simply login to the admin interface and make as much new content that you want without having to edit it page by page. I must say I never really cared for content management systems until I found a blog system like WordPress... I use to prefer to hand code everything into a blank page and once I was happy with the overall design of the page I would then save that page as a simple 'Template' file and build all of my content off of that blank page - simply adding the content in to the design. WordPress isn't really that hard to edit - I was a complete newbie when I first started messing with WordPress and didn't have a clue about PHP (I have learned everything I know from trial and error, editing other people's templates and talking on these forums to people like Don). I am still not confident enough to hand code an entire site in PHP, but I am confident enough to base my site off of a system like WordPress and then edit it to my personal needs and preferences. You will need to just play around and use the trial and error method and don't be afraid to ask questions. There are a lot of friendly people around the forums here willing to give advice and help out. I personally havn't had any issues with WordPress - keeping in mind that I just run a very small blog which I have not updated in like 4 months. lol
ericwilmoth
That's cool. My blog is intended to be professional to promote my personal website/comics, which is why I'm looking for the customization. I'm beginning to realize that for the moment i may need to sacrifice full customization to meet the urgency i have to get the basic blog up and running...I've just been so overwhelmed by all the options and have very little time to work with, but don't want to wind up putting up something either sub-par, too far removed from the look of my site or moving so far in one direction that i have to backtrack when i finally have the time to reanalyze all this. Word Press does seem to have the flexibility I'll ultimately want to take advantage of, so again, for now it looks like I'm just going to have to live with something that is to be a work in progress. TCH-Bruce
Maybe WPThemeKit can help you get a theme together that looks similar to your site.
ericwilmoth
Thanks, Bruce--that's definitely an option i hadn't yet discovered. I'll check that out. Have you or anyone else used this before?
TCH-Bruce
I just read about it the other day. I haven't had time to test it out.

ericwilmoth
By the way, i know i should be upgrading to the new WP. Can anyone point me in the right direction for taking care of that?
TCH-Bruce
You should be able to upgrade right through Fantastico. If not, download and install the update manually here.
ericwilmoth
I can do the fantastico thing, i believe...i jsut wasn't sure if that would overwrite everything or if it would preserve my settings.
TCH-Bruce
I've never used the WordPress upgrade feature in Fantastico but have used the Joomla one. It shouldn't cause any issues.
