Thanks all, great info here ... lots of stuff to check out. I'm especially intrigued by Lisa's enthusiasm for expression engine (downloading now), and Mike's statement that Textpattern has more CMS functions. I've been looking for a simple CMS to build an online portfolio, and after using MT as a cms for another clients site, I'm loathe to do it again. Moving my main mt site over to any new system is going to be a pain for me - multiple sideblogs, mt plugins for amazon links, comment subscription, polls. uck. Cheers, -Gabe

I had this exact problem, and thought I'd post how it worked for me in the hopes it might save some TCHers a bit of messing around. It's actually really simple once you know the steps. First of all, ftp down all your phpBB2 directories from the old host, and then upload them to TCH. Then back up the MySQL database on the old host (mine used webmin, not cpanel/phpMyAdmin, but it still worked fine), then import the database using phpMyAdmin on the new host. Create your database first on the new host, then add a user and connect it to the databse. Make a note of the names because they get converted, i.e. if your username is foo, and you make a database or user called foobar, you'll get foo_foobar. BIG IMPORTANT PART - you MUST open the database backup and look for any line with a bunch of dashes and either remove it, or put a space after the first two dashes, i.e. --------------------- becomes -- ------------------- Not sure why this happens, but you need to add the space to turn that line into a commment, which will be ignored, rather than a line of data, which will choke the import. So, now import your cleaned up data into your new database using phpMyAdmin (open the query window, then hit 'import files'). Now the only thing you should need to do is open your local copy of config.php, open in a text editor, ignore the lines that say "Do not change anything in this file' and edit $dbname, $dbuser (and $dbpassword, if you changed it), to match the new names, and upload to TCH, overwriting the one on the server. You're done! PS - I used a very similar procedure to move over my LARGE Movable Type blog with a minimum of fuss. Now just trying to figure out why my mtamazon plugin isn't cooperating. PPS - this is what worked for me, I take no responsibility whatsoever if you destroy your database, accidentally email your entire pr0n collection to everyone in your address book, or blow yourself up.

There already is a free version of 3.0, it just limits you to one author and three blogs. I have more than that already, so I'm sticking with 2.64 (I wish I'd downloaded 2.661 before they pulled it from the site - I've been scouring the net for somewhere to download the archive, to no avail). I think I'll probably to a test install of 3.0 just to try it out. The free version can be found at http://secure.sixapart.com/ look on the right side of the page. You need a typekey registration, but that's free and worth having anyway I do love MT (I even donated and everything), but it might be time to see if there's a great open source package out there ... --- Gabe

Hee hee. Yes, she has a really great, easy-to-read style, and the information is spot-on. I like to look at the David Car5on books as much as the next fella, but you can't learn much about the basics from them! I also really love "Creating Motion Graphics" books Volume One & Volume 2. I know this is an old thread, but it looks like it keeps kicking... How difficult would it be to also include a one-click UNinstall for any of these? It would be nice to know we can try them out without leaving cyberdroppings all over our nice clean webspaces. Also, FWIW, I'm a big MT fan too (although mulling over the ramifications of their new licensing, maybe time to go Open Source again ...). That said, I've installed it so many times I've got it down to about 8 minutes now Cheers, -Gabe

Hey FSUchucky, I have accumulated nearly 200 great links on exactly these topics. If you want to PM me your email address I'll zip them up and send them over. As far as books - first thing I would reccomend is subscriptions to Communication Arts, Print (even if you don't do a lot of print yet, the principles are the same, and you'll often find more inspiration in print sources than online), and HOW magazines. The subscriptions will give you far more bang for your buck than a couple of $50 books. That said, of course there are some great books out there too. For the absolute best guides to the basics, you can't go wrong with anything by Robin Williams (no, not that one . Off the top of my head: The Non-Designer's Design Book dont-leave-home-without-it! (don't be put off by the title, nearly everyone can learn a thing or two from this one - feel free to hide it when your clients come over another good one from her is the Robin Williams Design Workshop I know you didn't ask for this specifically, but if you're designing websites, a great book about the new improved way of doing things (css, and separating content from presentation etc...) is Designing With Web Standards by Jeffrey Zeldman That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but let me know if you want more and I'll dig through my bookshelf and brain Cheers, and best of luck, -Gabe

I moved a couple of domains over to TCH from my old host yesterday, and it looks like the mail is going to BOTH mail server. That is, the mail comes in whether I set my POP3 server to newdomainonTCH.net, or myoldhost.net. Is it just a matter of time until mail stop going to the old host (MX records, right? do they take longer to propogate) than DNS? Thx for any insight, -Gabe
