kaseytraeger
I just installed Joomla yesterday using Fantastico DeLuxe from within cPanel. The version of Joomla it installed is 1.0.15, however, I see from a lot of Joomla documentation that v1.5 Stable has been the "standard" since sometime in March. Does TCH recommend migrating from the default installation of 1.0.15 from Fantastico to the new 1.5 Stable? If so, is there a preferred method for handling the migration? If not, has anyone done a Joomla migration before and, just as importantly, would you be willing to assist me in migrating my installation to 1.5? Many thanks! TCH-Bruce
Since they are maintaining both branches at this time there is no need to migrate to the 1.5 version. However they will eventually stop working on the 1.0.x version at some point. The problem is there are many plugins and themes available for the 1.0.x version that are not available in the 1.5 version. I have a 1.0.x installation and have no current plans to migrate to 1.5 but I imagine they will have scripts to convert the database so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. TCH-Thomas
First of all, sorry that I assumed in an earlier post that the version in Fantastico was 1.5.x while it´s 1.0.x and I therefor could not help much with joomla since my "1.5" project was dropped. I have another installation based on the 1.0.x which I can help you with. When version 1.5 was released the above (dropped) project was still online and I thought about upgrading it to 1.5. I found instructions on how to upgrade, here but it looked like a nightmare, so while this site was still new and not officially open, I decided to build it from scratch in 1.5. I´m not sure which would have been the fastest. But with this in mind I know that if I am to install a new joomla installation today I would go for 1.5. Bruce is correct, there are much more themes and extensions for 1.0 but the 1.5 versions of themes and extensions gets more and more and since they will drop 1.0 some day, the developers of themes and extension must also make their stuff comaptible. kaseytraeger
Oops ... I got a little busy there and haven't checked in for the last few days. Thank you both for the insight into the two different versions of Joomla. I think I'll just leave my installation at 1.0.15 for now and take your suggestion to wait and see if more of the 1.5.x stuff becomes compatible... And if you're not concerned that it will be a bear to migrate from 1.0.x to 1.5.x, then I won't be, either!
