Domain Hosted On Google?

kalifornia

Recommended Posts

I bought a domain from TCH a while ago but have never gotten around to setting up hosting for it. I noticed that Blogger.com allows me to redirect the DNS entries for this to host my blog there but allow me to use my domain still without having to forward it to http://<myblog>.blogspot.com.

The problem I am having is that when I try to update my nameservers to ghs.google.com, I keep getting an error message. Apparently I need two nameservers but Blogger only lists one and, to be honest, I'm not even sure if I am doing this correctly.

Please help and thanks in advance.

Open a ticket with the help desk and they should be able to help you.

As to why you would want to do that is another question? I used Blogger a long time ago before switching to WordPress and they have an option that allows you to use their blogging interface and publish your blog to your TCH hosted domain. This would be what I would do.

Thanks for the help, I will open a ticket. I guess the best reason to this this would be because they offer a free solution to hosting it as opposed to paying for it.

You mention a TCH hosted domain which I don't have. I only have the domain itself (purchased through TCH), but it is not currently set up for hosting anywhere. If I understand your explanation correctly, I would need to set up hosting with TCH first and then I could manage it though Wordpress?

With Blogger I can just use my domain and then have it pointed to the servers at Google where my blogger posts are already hosted.

The one drawback to hosting using your domain with Blogger is that you would need to have something to manage your DNS entries. What blogger provides is the entries to point your domain to the blogger account and not nameservers. I currently use google apps with one of my domains, where the hosted part is on the server with TCH but certain records pointed towards google. Since you don't have a hosting account with us, the domain is not handled by our nameservers.

Thanks for the help but I think I'm still confused as to why this is so difficult. Perhaps this link will help, which explains exactly what I am trying to do:

How do I use a custom domain name on my blog?

Here's are some quotes from the help section that I think summarize the content:

To take care of this, you need to create a CNAME record for your domain with the DNS, associating your domain with ghs.google.com. The exact procedure for doing this varies depending on your domain registrar

Google hosts lots of blogs, so we have to make sure the right one is associated with this domain. You'll do this on the Settings | Publishing tab for your blog in Blogger.

Does this help with what I am looking for? BTW, I submitted a help desk ticket on this but never got a response about it so I'm not sure if I should follow up here to continue conversations or with the hep desk ticket itself.

Thanks again for the responses and the help!

The Domain Registration and Hosting are separate. If you had hosting with us, then we manage the DNS for you, but since you don't have hosting with us you have no one ( currently) managing your DNS.

There are a large number of providers for managing your DNS from free ( everydns.net ) to typically $15 / year ( dyndns.com, dnsmadeeasy.com ) through whom you can manage the DNS and set it to blogger / google.

If you sign up with one of the many providers of DNS, then you can do exactly what you are trying to achieve.
