does anyone use Ubuntu?

I just installed it on 2 computers. One works fine but the second one hangs up every time I try to get the 282 updates available.

The first pc did it fine, but the 2nd just hangs.

thanks in advance.

( new to Ubuntu )

Can you please try with your own risk

Reboot your box, and press ESC to enter the GRUB menu

Select the previous version of the kernel xxx. rather than xxx.new - don't select the fail-safe mode.

Log-in as your admin user into recovery mode

Manually (re)start the upgrade via a terminal session: dpkg --configure -a

It didn't work. I tried a complete clean re-install. no good.

I went to terminal to give commands, but the terminal window comes up a blank empty square on the screen

and hangs.

the pc is an older dell pentium III , 512 mg ram, 900 mhz - from what I can find , that should be fine as far as

requirements.

Ok. I went to appearances, ( because the little 1 inch squares that came on everywhere the mouse sat bugged me ),

and all I did was change the effects from NORMAL to NONE.

She is now working fine and retrieving 283 updates.

Thanks a BUNCH for the help. I am newly trying the Linux family so you will no doubt see me here again.
