Storing Mysql Passwords For Php

I am using PHP to connect to a MySQL database on my site. Where should the passwords be stored and is there a recommended method for safety, like encryption?

I know the passwords should not be stored in the PHP include.

You can set the database parameters on a file below public_html  directory and then call the file using an include statement.
