Henrietta
My name is Henrietta and I am new to the forum. I would describe myself as being at first grade level, I know a little but am working on learning 'joined up writing'. Been selling on eBay both at auction and a store for years, and like so many others I am a refugee from incessant increases in fees and corresponding decreases in service received. I will still be on eBay but with a much lower profile. I came here to TCH because of this forum. I am awed by the unfailing patience & courtesy I have observed. Thank you in advance because I am sure my very basic questions will drive you equally mad. I signed up for Silver Level hosting because that was the closest to the GoDaddy hosting I am abandoning. GoDaddy has good support but also 'issues' with shopping carts other than their own, which do not fit my needs. REALLY Basic Questions 1. What exactly is 'transfer' 2. Bandwidth? Is there an internet terms dictionary anywhere with definitions? Shop Carts 1. Is there anyone who has Suncart, AND is using it? IMO Suncart has dreadful customer support and the current version is clunky, but I bought it because it was on the Paypal list. It does not appear on the current list of Paypal compatible carts. Lesson learned. If either of the available carts is better I will try to sell my Suncart license. 2. I see that there are two carts available at TCH, although neither seems to be on the Paypal list, and am wondering how customizable they are as far as front end appearance goes. I do not want to get into the monthly cart rental payments thing. I am now at zero tolerance point for others skimming a cut off my sweat and tears. 3. Would welcome input about relative ease of use, mainly back end, for Agora or Interchange. 4. I am going to eventually be sharing my site with two other eBay sellers. Is there any way to have separate carts on the same site? SSL I do not have a problem with paying fees to Paypal, even if they are owned by eBay, mainly because their fees appear to be lower than any other solution I have found to date, including Costco's merchant processing. 1. I believe, but am not certain, that I do not need an SSL if all my payments are processed with Paypal? 2. Is the SSL tied to the server or shared hosting provider? The question here is that TCH seems to be about FIVE times higher than I have seen elsewhere. Can I still use the certificate obtained elsewhere when I transfer my domain? Moving I am not feeling terribly confident about this. 1. I should backup my databases to my own computer before I do anything? 2. What is the correct order to move files. 3. Is there a way to duplicate everything here before I actually move the domain? Thanks again Edited March 11, 2007 by Henrietta
TCH-Andy
Welcome to the family and forums Henrietta 1. What exactly is 'transfer'2. Bandwidth? Is there an internet terms dictionary anywhere with definitions? Transfer is usually when you move something from one place to another. Bandwidth is the total amount of data (files, emails etc) uploaded and downloaded from your/to account There are a number of definition sites - try http://www.matisse.net/files/glossary.html With regard to shopping carts - I'm not a big user, so I'll leave someone else to answer that one SSL - 1. It's best to have an SSL for links with paypal - but you can use the shared SSL provided free by us, or you can buy your own (either through us, or elsewhere). Moving 1. I should backup my databases to my own computer before I do anything? 2. What is the correct order to move files. 3. Is there a way to duplicate everything here before I actually move the domain? Yes - I would take a backup. It doesn't matter what order you move the files in - as long as you move them all. Yes, you can test everything here before you move the domain over. If you currently use cpanel, then just ask us (via a ticket, link for the help desk at the top of the page) and we'll try moving it all for you. stevesh
I looked at every cart I could find which was free or had a free demo available, and ended up using Zencart. Pretty steep learning curve, but the documentation is getting better (there's a book available now. It's expensive, but very good), and the support forum is almost as good as TCH's. Zencart is, like almost all open source software, a work in progress, but it's active and the developers are very available in the forums. It works fine with Paypal (although there is some question whether you can use it with Paypal's merchant account). Our cart is here: www.paramountcoffe.com/cart and there is a gallery of Zencart sites in their forums. Steve
