OnlineAutorama Posted June 26, 2007 Share Posted June 26, 2007 (edited) I've been using FrontPage user for a long time now and I've had two accounts here for a long time now and I was wondering,... For the people who use MS FrontPage what kind of servers would be better to use, A Linux or Windows Server? Theres things inside of frontpage that it would seem Linux servers just wouldnt support. Some of the templates that come with FP use extensions that linux servers dont support where a microsoft server could. Now i have no idea how different hosts and servers run their servers and theres probably things that a linux server has that a windows server doesnt and vice versa, Yes, No?. What are your thoughts on where people who use frontpage should really be? Making this website I want to be making right now is driving me nuts trying to get stuff put together for it so i'm just wondering before i sign up a third account. Thanks. Jim. TCH-Andy Posted June 26, 2007 Share Posted June 26, 2007 Jim, Microsoft stopped supporting FrontPage last year - as they move to Microsoft Expression, so personally I'd suggest a change over to Expression (or one of the other packages) as at some point in the future you will have problems with FrontPage on either platform. Yes, I understand MS has stopped support on it, So does this mean that you will no longer have frontpage extentions on your server? Probably not. Is it not true that frontpage created pages that linux servers do not support? I'm guessing that the new version of expressions will be the same. So i guess i'll have to say this another way then. If you want to use the plugins that Frontpage has (I am not familiar with Expressions) then a Windows server would probably serve you better. As the Linux extensions do not support them. The latest release of FrontPage (which I believe is also several years old) came out after the last extensions release, and it has some features that are not supported - I think some dynamic content stuff or something, not really sure. To my knowledge there are no compatibility issues with Expressions on Linux per se, or at least it doesn't require extensions. (Thank god.) Given that it's developed by Microsoft, I am sure there is a balance in there to make it as compatible as possible so as to sell as many copies as possible, but there are probably going to be some goodies in there that will only work on Windows. Like if you want to get into some ASP.NET stuff or whatever it is Windows dev people use. Given that the larger share of web servers in the world run some form of Linux, I'd bet that compatibility will be good enough such that the majority of users will be fine with Expressions on Linux. In general, regardless of the compatibility issues with Expressions, I think it would be unwise to invest much in the way of a brand new heavily FrontPage-dependent site. It has been "end-of-lifed" for some time now, Expressions is out, and Apache 2 is on its way (and does not play well with FP). It's time to move on. It just seems like some of the templates i'd like to use to create a website arnt supported on a linux server. I'd like to use an editor that has templates that i can use that would be compatible with the server that i'm using. Have you tried expressions yet? It's very different from FP and I find not as easy to use. Like in FP it was easy to change the theme of your website, with expressions i havent been able to find that feature.
