Font Limit To Photoshop Cs

Hi guys.

I've just installed "5000" fonts (probably all duplicates!!) but Photoshop CS only gives me the option to use A to F?!?!

Anyone know why it does this and if there's a way of upping the supposed limit to the amount of fonts available???

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks guys

Ron

Well, that is one way to increase your registry size. I would get a font viewer or something like Adobe TypeManager so you can discard or turn on or off the fonts you don't need or use.

As to a limit in PS? I havent seen one, byt then I dont have 5K fonts either.

Get a Font Manager. I'm not sure if there is a hard coded limit in PS, but it is a common complaint. I believe that PS loads all of those fonts into memory. Just out of curiosity how much memory does your system have.

Here is a some information on font limits for Windows.

Windows NT, 2000 or XP

These have no limitation on the number of fonts which can be installed, although the boot time will be increased due to the requirement to read the information for all those fonts while the system is starting up.

Windows 95/98/Me

You can install a maximum of approximately 1000 TrueType fonts in Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium. The exact number of TrueType fonts you can install varies, and depends on the length of the TrueType font names and file names.

Installed TrueType fonts are listed in the registry and in the Graphics Device Interface (GDI).

The Registry

All font files are registered under a single key in the registry, and a registry key cannot exceed 64 KB in Windows 95. If font names average 20 characters in length and font file names average 10 characters in length, the maximum number of TrueType fonts you can install falls between 1000 and 1500.

If a TrueType font file is located in a folder other than the Fonts or the System folder, the full path to the font is included in the registry, using up more space in the key and reducing the number of fonts you can install.

The GDI

The GDI contains an internal list of fonts, with 10 KB reserved for font file names. If font file names average 10 characters in length, the maximum number of TrueType fonts you can install is approximately 1000.

You can use all installed TrueType fonts simultaneously and you can print them in the same document.

Note that the Windows 95 Resource Kit incorrectly states that there is no limit to the number of TrueType fonts you can install in Windows 95 and Windows 98.

Welcome to the forums, Ron! :thumbup1:

I'd second the recommendation for a font manager - no one needs 5000 fonts loaded up at the same time, all the time.

As far as I know, Windows XP does not impose any arbitrary limits on the number of fonts installed. I don't know if Photoshop CS has any limits, but the symptoms you're describing don't sound like a font limit problem to me.

I suspect that one or more of those 5000 fonts you installed is damaged or not compatible with Windows XP. Figuring out which one(s) is the problem may not be an easy task, but I'd first suspect the last font listed in Photoshop CS, and the next font listed in your Fonts folder (listed alphabetically).

Hi guys.

Thanks for all the advice, I actually loaded the fonts using Adobe Font Manager Delux, and my systyem has a gig of ram, i really cant get my head round it, everything else, Flash, Illustrator etc can view the fonts fine, just not PS.

I'm really pulling my hair out as I'm up to my eyeballs in work and I cant do much without some specific fonts that are unavailable! Aaargh!

Thanks again guys.

Ron,

My understanding is that PS has an (unacknowledged) font limit of 512 fonts.

You need to do as has been suggested and use a font manager to activate only the fonts you need at a given time. I use ATM with about 8,000 fonts and create sets for each project. When I am working on a particular project, I just activate that set. So I only have from 100-200 active at any one time.

HTH!
