TCH-Don Posted October 26, 2004 Share Posted October 26, 2004 With any of the cpanel installs, you will be asked to enter a folder name to install into. I suppose you could try them both. You can also remove them in cpanel the same place you install them. I know that ether will take some time to modify to suite. I am sure others that use them will post their opinions. Seconded I havn't used any extensively (I don't do ecommerce), but I've installed both scripts and tried them. osCommerce is easier to pick up and just use. You can accept payment via a number of different ways, PayPal, check/money order or your own merchant account. Although my site is a work in progress with OSC you can see what can be done with it by clicking the www under my post. CCS Posted December 1, 2004 Share Posted December 1, 2004 I have just started checking into making a shopping cart for gift certificates. I seen this forum and I know that it is on the right track but I do not see a osCommerce cart. Only the Agora and Interchange. Interchange says it does not work well with cPanel. Am I just not seeing the osCommerce or does TCH not have it any longer? My next question would be to do with SSL Keys. I need this to be a secure site so would I need a SSL Key and if so, what is the best way to go about this. Thank you in advance! If it's not there please open a Help Desk ticket (link above) so that one of the techs can update your site. If you have a reseller account you will need to purchase your own SSL certificate. CDfuse.com Posted January 24, 2005 Share Posted January 24, 2005 No shopping cart system was customizable enough for our site (cdfuse.com) so I designed one from scratch. It works with our account at Authorize flawlessly and I can modify, create, and delete anything and everything about it. Sure, it takes more time, but I think its worth it for a truly custom feel. If I have only one product to sell, do I still need a "shopping cart"? 2. If I install oSCommerce from the controll pannel, will I be able to easily make the pages required for the purchase "look and feel" like the rest of the site? 3. A previous post implied that if I use the oSCommerce script, that I would not have to pay for an SSL certificate; do I understand that correctly? 3.a. If that's true, will users get a popup warning that the certificate does not match the domain (or something to that effect)? 4. I plan to use PayPal - Website Payments Pro to start out with. Are there any reasons I might not want to do that? (I'm brand new to online pmt, if you haven't picked that up...) If you use the shared certificate on the server for your shopping cart your customers will get the warning popup. If you purchase your own SSL cert this doesn't happen. I see alot of carts that are standard pages with the add to cart paypal button. I think it really depends on the functionality you need. I personally would want an back-end admin area to track orders. 2) That is a hard question to answer...it depends on your site, your skill level etc. Bruce handled 3 and 3a so I will skip to 4. 4) My understanding is that Website Payments Pro is very new and has some strict rules. OSC right "out of the box" won't work with it, however, there is a Paypal Website Payments Pro module out this month. I took a look at the OSC forums and was going to see how difficult the module is to install, but the forum post on it is 22 pages long. I've been reading the posts on the OSC site, and looking into "authorize.net" which was mentioned more than once there. I've reached "Saturation Point", and can't digest any more there... Can anyone simplify all this stuff??? I want to get set up with the ability to take CC transactions for ONE product. I want to get set up as easily and quickly as possible, and not pay more than I need to. I just have to believe that I'm not alone!! Is there a shopping cart / merchant account combination that is relatively quickly set up and easily understandable, that people here would recommend? Are there tutorials that I should search for here at tch? FYI - the website I'm working on is built with phpWebsite, and I have DreamWeaverMX (and all the other Macromedia stuff) for design. If there are things that work well with these, I'd like to hear about them. Our business account is with Wells Fargo, who I've been told has great service for merchant accounts; but I was also told that it would be far more complicated and expensive to start with them than with PayPal. Does this mean that there is a simple way to set up OSC with Authorize.net? Is anyone using this service that can comment on service/cost/etc.? (I personally can't stand OScommerce, and will always use ZenCart instead, but that's just a personal preference.) Setting OScommerce up with Authorize.Net should be as simple as 1) signing up for an Authorize.Net account and getting your username and password. 2) Activating the Authorize.Net module in Oscommerce 3) entering the appropriate Authorize.Net account info. All the open-source carts have fairly steep learning curves, but once you've figured it out, Zencart is amazingly configurable. I use a merchant account from our regular bank (Comerica) with Verisign's Payflow Link. No problems with either. I have also heard good things about Wells Fargo. A few people had said they made a patch, but I think 2CO changed some more stuff, and I can't seem to get it to work. Other than that, I like zencart quite a bit. There is definately a learning curve IF you want to customize the look and feel extensively. If you're okay with it pretty much out of the box, its much easier. And even then, the learning curve is basically largely just getting used to which files are kept in which directory. No open source e-commerce solution that I have come across is truly plug-and-play - any of the ones that are remotely flexible are also complicated and require a little tech bit of tech skill (and often a lot of patience). I avoid OScommerce simply because the code is so freakish and (imho) kludgy. Another example of an app that started off on the right track, but tried to be everything to everyone. My idea was to just get up-n-running with PayPal, and then "upgrade" to a WellsFargo account eventually, but I was definately making uninformed decisions... Looks like the "Website Payment Pro" program isn't all it's cracked up to be, and the only other option sends user right to the PayPal site. Don't want that! (which operates very much the same way zen cart did if not easier. but im having serious issues configuring this time around and im afraid that Verisign's Payflowlink may be to blame. heres what I know. I have configured the CMS and Cart and have set up a test product. also configured the payment system to use Payflowlink again.
